On any given day in the Becker Intermediate music room, students can be found singing, playing instruments, moving, listening, discussing, problem solving, working individually/in small groups/as a class, and enjoying music. We are busy!
It is my belief that all students have the ability to create and think about music. We are constantly assessing the music that we are listening to and making and then making decisions on what to do with it. Sometimes, we find that revisions in our performance, our group or the music need to be made to make the music sound how we want it to. Our music grades are another way to assess and revise how the students and myself, as the teacher, are doing. On most days, I will assess one aspect of the music we are involved in. It might be the students' singing that I am looking at one day and then their ability to perform rhythms the next music day.
The music grade on the report card has two different categories: participation and skill.
Participation takes into account whether the students are involved in the music time or not.
Skill includes the actual music-ing: singing, playing, moving, rhythm, creating and other ways to make music.
Students will receive one of four grades in each category.
E: exceeds expectations, performs above and beyond the expected level
M: meets expectations, performs at the expected level
P: partially meets expectations, performs below but is working toward the expected level
GA: growth area, an area where the student still has growing to do as they do not yet meet grade-level expectations
